A Blast from the past

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has grown so much since Royce Gracie took the world by storm in UFC 1.   The first UFC was held at McNichols Arena in Dever, CO on November 12, 1993.  The days of being a one trick pony are over, now you need to be a true Mixed Martial Artist as the sport has developed over the past 20 years.

In UFC 1 all the fighters were masters in one Martial Art and everyone watching were placing bets on which one would prevail; Would it be Karate? Would it be Sumo?  Would it be boxing? We all saw the lightest man in the competition, Royce Gracie, prevail with his Jiu Jitsu style.  As the years of Pride and UFC continued fighters realized that they needed to be more well rounded and know each fighting style to be successful.  The great fighters today have spent years training Jiu Jitsu, years training stand up (Muay Thai, Boxing,Karate, ect) and years training wrestling and Judo.  The committment, and time dedication and sacrifice is huge.  That is why when I see a guy rocking a tapout shirt booing a fight because it went to the ground all I can do is shake my head.  It is exciting to watch this great sport continue to grow before our very eyes.
