Compete for a Good Cause

One of the local area Black Belts Paul Nava is throwing a tournament next month.  The proceeds will go to benefit a research for a rare disease that his family suffers from.  Not only will this be a great opportunity to compete, but you will be doing your part to help out a family that plays a large roll in the AZ BJJ Community.  I will be competing.

Here is some more information posted by Paul Nava:

INTRODUCING THE 1ST ANNUAL D.A.N. TOURNAMENT

On January 11th Nava BJJ will be hosting its very first annual D.A.N. tournament. I just wanted to take this opportunity to explain what this tournament is about, and what it means to me. D.A.N. stands for the name of my son Damien Antonio Nava. As many people know my wife, and two youngest kids live with a genetic disease called Neurofibromatosis type 2. Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF 2) is a disorder characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors throughout …the nervous system. The most common tumors associated with Neurofibromatosis type 2 are called vestibular schwannomas or acoustic neuromas.  These are benign, usually slow-growing tumors that develop from the balance and hearing nerves supplying the inner ear. If tumors develop in other parts of the brain or spinal cord, signs and symptoms vary according to their location. Complications tumor growth can include changes in vision or sensation, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, and fluid buildup in the brain. NF2 can cause deafness, severe balance problems, facial nerve paralysis, spinal cord compression, swallowing difficulties and/or eye function complications. While this disorder is very complicated the purpose of our lives are clear to us as we continue the fight to provide the best for our family. We also have a determination to fight on behalf of those living and struggling every single day with this awful disease. My son Damien truly has become one of the greatest examples of inspiration in my life. In just the short time since his diagnosis he has already faced 2 major surgeries, and each time with renewed hope. Facing deafness Damien continues to prove to me, and others that this life is about more than the struggle. Instead it’s about looking past the pain for the hope he knows ultimately lies ahead. This tournament is not only an opportunity to help me continue to meet the medical needs of my family, but to help bring awareness for the many people that need a cure for NF2. I hope that we will be able to support a few of the various foundations that spend countless dollars on research to end this ongoing battle. I look forward to seeing you all, and although I can never thank you enough I will always seek to support this awesome Jiu Jitsu community the best I can.
