Jiu Jitsu is Life

Do you remember all those shirts that got popular for awhile, “Football is Life,” Basketball is Life,” or “Golf is life?”  Turns out those shirts are stupid, as would be a shirt that says “Jiu Jitsu is life.”  In reality “life is life” that seems to make the most sense to me, but I do believe Jiu Jitsu can be a great life coach.  Jiu Jitsu to me is a tool to keep my serenity, sanity, and overall quality of life.  It also helps me prepare for real life problems.  For example if I have a struggling day of Jiu Jitsu I have to handle that adversity and grow from it.  This is also true when life hands you a difficult situation, this is the way Jiu Jitsu can be a great life coach.

I went to a student of mine, Kaitlyn Felix, Graduation from high school this week, congrats Killa!  It made me think back about my own graduation and how big of a deal that was to me.  I felt like I was getting so old and accomplished, out to the real world.  I compare this feeling to a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu, you are on the top of the world, you know almost everything and you are truly a bad ass.  You get to college, mix in living your own, having to buy your own toiletries, having to be completely responsible of your schedule, trying to figure out what to study for a career, all of sudden you are just not that smart.  Welcome to purple belt!

You struggle through college, graduate or drop out, and then the real world really smacks you in the face.  You don’t quite feel grown up, but the world is telling you it is time.  Can’t I just take a little bit more time to grow up?  Welcome to brown belt.

One morning you boss calls in you in for a huge promotion, you get approved for your first house, you’re engaged to be married.  Well you finally made it, BLACK BELT!  Wait a minute weren’t you suppose to have it all figured out by now?  Well the AC crashed at the house, you got let go from your job due to cut backs, and this marriage thing is more work than they showed on Growing Pains.  Life is life enjoy the journey, I wonder if when you get to Red Belt if you will have it all figured out, some how I would have to say no.  Just trying to get better everyday in Jiu Jitsu and life so I am not living in a van down by the river.
