This past Saturday the NABJJF (North American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) hosted its first tournament in Arizona.  The Federation has been around several years now and puts on most of its tournaments in California.  It is always nice to go check out new tournaments that are ran well in AZ.  Fellow Brown Belt Instructor Jesus Jose and I ended up referring this weekend to put some extra cash in our pockets.  This was my largest tournament that I have refereed and I was a little nervous.  To calm down the nerves I made a call against the liking of former professional football player Michael Westbrook (see video below).  Nothing like having an enormous man arguing with you to calm the nerves.  You may remember Westbrook from his famous training camp fight with then teammate Stephen Davis for the Washington Redskins.  Westbrook is now a respected BJJ Black Belt under Gustavo Dantes, he stayed pretty calm arguing his position on the call luckily for me.  After a while a mom made the subtle disagreement with Westbrook feel like a cake walk.  The mom’s little boy got bumped and decided I was the worst person in the World for letting it go down, my life flashed before my eyes as I took the verbal lashing from this new highbred of a soccer mom, a Jiu Jitsu mom.  Again I thank God I made it out alive.

Siege MMA/Lotus Club Jiu Jitsu kicked some tail at the tournament bringing home the 5th place team trophy on only 6 competitors.  We racked up and impressive 5 Golds, 3 Silvers, and a bronze thanks to the solid performances from Rich Simons, Tyson Antillion, Robert Maloney, Steve Munoz, Brandon, and Joe.

Thank you for the photos
