One Brown Belt Claudio Rios

Last night was a special night at the gym.  Thanks to Claudio’s lack of having a Facebook, the word was spread that there would be a very special promotion.  Friday night Jiu Jitsu is often a slow night, but last night there was around 30 people on the mat.

I remember the first time I came over to Siege MMA to take a class under Professor Ricardo Zanelato, I was a two year blue belt at the time and was blown away by the class.  Ricardo was and still is the man, great technique, and when we rolled he introduced me to the seal mount and a tremendous amount of pressure.  I knew I had to do the tough task of switching gyms because I knew I had found my new home.

Another thing I remember about that night is this one tough s.o.b. of a white belt that passed my guard and gave me some mean shoulder pressure from side control.  That white belt was Claudio Rios, that was my first roll with Claudio and the last time I underestimated him.  As I moved over to Siege permanently and eventually started teaching there I have had the privilege of training along side Claudio and watching his growth in Jiu Jitsu.  Claudio is one of those rare breeds that comes to the gym everyday with a great attitude and is ready to work.  I can count on him to get some extra drilling or rolling in before class, bounce ideas off, bring new techniques, and being a great training partner.  Last night with Professor Giva Santana’s approval Claudio was awarded his Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.   I feel very proud to be apart of his Jiu Jitsu Journey.
