R.I.P. Marc Zee

I first started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing in 2005 at Arizona Center of Mixed Martial Arts (ACMMA) in Phoenix, AZ, that is where I met one of my first BJJ Instructors Marc Zee.  After training with Marc for over a year he awarded me my Blue Belt in 2006, I then trained two more years under his instruction.  Last night Marc passed away at a relatively young age, I am not sure on the specifics of his death.  After I heard the news last night I couldn’t help to look back at my training with him.  I followed his school from ACMMA to a new location when it became Gracie Barra Phoenix.  I will always be grateful to him for the knowledge he shared with me and providing me the avenue to start the life changing experience of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  My prayers go out to the Zee family, may Marc rest in peace.

My son Jonathan started training with Marc when he was 8 years old. He is now 14. Marc had a very special way in connecting with the kids. However Jon had to stop his jiu jitsu training 3 years later due to a heart issue. Marc went out of his way to comfort my son and make him feel that it was OK as he also had a heart issue. Marc will always hold a very special place in our hearts. I think that Marc had a very special gift and a very special heart. Jon will miss him as will we all. I am so very sorry for your loss and the loss that we all feel. Rest in peace to a very special friend.

I also trained with him, and only found this out last night… he was a great man, he was awesome with kids and had a big heart… he would always let the guys train even if they couldn’t afford their monthly dues. I have a heart condition too and honestly thought we we’re both ok… I miss him and pray for him…

Marc was a friend of mine and I trained with him at GB Phoenix when I visited from GB Chino in Californa… I remember talking to Marc many nights at 2-3 am all on the subject of Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu… I am planing on returning to Arizona to open a Gracie Barra Academy when I am done here in Brazil training and living with Master Carlos Gracie Jr. Marc wanted to help me with this goal. You will be missed Brother… but your dreams will live through the sweat, blood, and tears of every student that train at the new academy… will never never forget the passion you had for our Art. Gracie Barra Forever !
