Rainbows Over The Rim

WOW!  Woke up this morning to put on ESPN Sportscenter, even woke up slightly before 7am to catch the top story.  I turned on the TV to see another Gay Athlete come out of the closet as the headline story of the show.  I wasn’t thinking “wow” because another kid came out of the closet.  I was saying “wow” because the NCAA Women’s National Championship Game that saw UCONN go an amazing 40-0 fell second to some College Basketball Player that I bet you have never heard of until today.  Other top stories; Kevin Durant’s streak of chasing the most consecutive games with 30 points in a row ended, The Masters (Golf’s Largest Event) is set to start, an Olympic Sprinter”s Murder Trial all falling behind this kid.   I’m curious if I am that bad guy here for being agitated by this?

Here is my reason for being agitated, whether you are for or against Homosexuality aside why is this being so glorified.  I understood when Jason Collins, a terrible NBA Player, came out recently that was a story.  Collins was the first openly Gay Athlete in any of the Major Professional Sports, him coming out was a good reflection on societies improvement in acceptance.  It was nice to see that this guy could come out to the other players in the league and had the courage to come out in front of the nation, I could see a five minute story on this.  They proceeded to do a 48 hour coverage like there was really that much to talk about.  Let me break it down for you, Jason digs Dudes!

Next we have this guy Michael Sam who is a projected 4th or 5th round pick in this years NFL Draft.  Sam who is currently a student athlete at the University of Missouri came out of the closet making him the first College Football Player to do so.  Sportscenter took it for a ride for another 48 hours. I don’t know about you but I do not need to hear about the first College Soccer, Tennis, Swimming, Cheerleading, ect. Athlete to come out of the closet.  I think it going against the equality that our country is fighting for..  I think that a Homosexual should get the same rights as a straight person, they are no less of a person just have their own sexual preference period.  That being said you don’t get  special treatment because of your sexual preference, that doesn’t make sense.

I think ESPN should be ashamed of themselves for Glorifying an Athlete for coming out of the closet over celebrating the success of athletes that worked very hard to achieve their story on Sportscenter.  Right now it would be a good career move for a sub par straight athlete to come out of the closet, get a head line story on SportsCenter and ride to the spotlight.
