Ultimate Experience

Last weekend the UFC came to Phoenix for the first time to put on a spectacular show. I was able to take in the whole experience as I cornered performance bonus winner Ian Enty.

I met and worked with Ian in 2011 at Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket Thailand. Ian was there training for a fight and had asked me to help with some Jiu Jitsu techniques and to go over some wrestling. We worked over a couple of weeks in mostly private lesson training. Ian is from England and ran his camp for his fight last Saturday in England, and leading up to the camp spent time with Phuket Top Team in Thailand. Ian’s coaches were unable to make the fight so Ray Elbe and I stepped in.

I went and stopped by Ian’s hotel last Tuesday shortly after he arrived in the Phoenix. Ian looked strong but when he told me what his weight was for his debut fight at 135lbs I was a little concerned. Luckily on Thursday Ray got in to town and was able to come up with a weight cut strategy. It was a tough couple of days but we managed to make weight with .1 lb to spare.

Fight Day I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that being in the room with some of the top fighters in the top MMA organization in the world wasn’t a bit intimidating. It was an incredible experience being able to pick the minds of top notch coaches and view fighters go through their physical and mental pre fight preperation. I have cornered many fighters in my day but the UFC was a whole new animal.

Ian was the first of the night. He came out fast but was taken down early in the first round. Ian used a butterfly guard sweep threat to make his opponent base on his leg, Ian quickly threw on a heel hook. Heel hook is a submission that directly targets the opponents knee, Ian rolled to the cage and finished the fight just over a minute into the first round.

The rest of the fights were great, truly a card that lived up to its hype. Thanks Perkins for the gift and the company!

Congrats Ian on the fight and the $50k performance bonus!
